How Change Happens

John P Kotter, of Harvard Business School, has achieved world acclaim for his research into what makes business transformations fail. Amber to Green uses Kotter’s eight steps to successful change, combined with work by Deloitte Consulting on the use of emotions to facilitate change.

Each of the following needs to happen, normally in this order, for any change to be successful:

1.    Increase urgency

2.    Build the guiding team

3.    Get the vision right

4.    Communicate for buy-in

5.    Empower people to act

6.    Create short-term wins

7.    Build on early credibility

8.    Make the change stick
